Surface band segregation and internal convection in rotating sphere densely filled with granular material: Experiments

چکیده

While granular segregation in partially filled containers has been studied extensively, dynamics densely spheres is not fully understood. Here, surface band and convection are reported a rotating sphere of highly compacted glass beads. Distinct from the Rayleigh–Bénard convection, butterfly shaped structure with vortexes alternating layers small/large beads, which stable independent size. Two concentric interfaces at zero tangential/norm flux discovered, divide into three to core. The law that governs jamming remains an open question.
